Joint Commission Announces a New Standard for all Acute Care Hospitals

The Joint Commission announced a new Medication Management (MM) standard that addresses antimicrobial stewardship. This standard is aimed at reducing the use of inappropriate antimicrobials in healthcare settings due to antimicrobial resistance. The current Antimicrobial Use Initiative of HMS supports this new standard by collecting data related to the antibiotics used in the treatment of hospitalized medical patients diagnosed with pneumonia or urinary tract infections. By identifying opportunities for quality improvement, hospitals that participate in HMS are able to maintain the antimicrobial stewardship standard.
